Service Members in South Carolina Enjoy National Oreo Cookie Day with the USO
Not too many people know that one of America’s most popular cookie brands has its very own national recognition day, but USO South Carolina has this day marked on their calendars each year, March 6 – National Oreo Cookie Day.
According to nationalday.com, the Oreo cookie is made up of two chocolate disks containing a sweet cream filling and is loved by millions. Since its introduction, the Oreo cookie has become one of the best-selling cookies in the United States. These little cookies have captured our hearts and our stomachs.
In preparation for National Oreo Cookie Day USO South Carolina worked with Lowes Foods, a popular grocery store chain in South Carolina, to collect packages of Oreos purchased and donated by shoppers for the USO to distribute.
USO South Carolina delivered approximately 1,100 family size packages of Oreos to service members on duty at the Fort McCrady Training Center, and recruiters stationed in Columbia, Irmo and Lexington, S.C., areas on March 4, to brighten their day.
“We look forward to this day each year, said Katie Kennedy, Senior Operations and Programs Manager, USO South Carolina. “We work with each military installation’s leadership, their respective training schools and South Carolina National Guard to identify who will be on duty around the 6th of March, and wouldn’t mind a covert Oreo cookie delivery, as we wanted to surprise service members on duty while minimizing any disturbance to their duties or training on National Oreo Cookie Day.”
Even Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Jones, Deputy Adjutant General for the South Carolina Army National Guard, got into the spirit of National Oreo Cookie Day, donning an Oreo costume and handed out bags of Oreo cookies to his soldiers helping to boost their morale.

“You have no idea how much we lifted morale today. That was huge,” said Jones.
Throughout a service member’s military journey, it is often the little things that brightens their day, and USO South Carolina did just that on National Oreo Cookie Day.
