USO South Carolina Delivers Smiles, Oreo Cookies to Service Members On Duty During National Oreo Cookie Day

Since its inception in 1912, the Oreo cookie has grown to become one of America’s most popular cookie brands.

Not too many people know the Oreo has its very own national recognition day, but USO South Carolina has this day marked on their calendars each year, March 6 – National Oreo Cookie Day.

According to nationalday.com, the Oreo cookie is made up of two chocolate disks containing a sweet cream filling and is loved by millions. These little cookies have captured our hearts and our stomachs for the past 100 years.

Similar to the USO which has over 270 center locations throughout the globe, the Oreo cookie can be found in more than 100 countries. Today, Oreos come in a variety of flavors, sizes and varying degrees of “stufness,” from ‘Oreo Thins,’ to ‘Most Stuf.’

In preparation for National Oreo Cookie Day, USO South Carolina worked with Lowes Foods, a popular grocery store chain in South Carolina, and has been doing so for that past four years to collect packages of Oreos purchased and donated by shoppers for the USO to distribute.

“Thanks to the customers and teams at Lowes Foods stores across South Carolina, we are thrilled to be able to support service members training and working throughout the state on National Oreo Day, said Joanie Thresher, Executive Director, USO South Carolina. “Seeing the smiles on the service members faces when USO volunteers surprised them in the field, at their recruiting station or at their armory with Oreos makes it all worthwhile.”

USO South Carolina delivered approximately 2,790 family size packages of Oreos to service members on duty at the McCrady Training Center, and recruiting stations throughout parts of the state, to include several National Guard armories, Army Reserve centers, Fort Jackson, Shaw Air Force Base, and Joint National Guard Base McEntire on March 6, to brighten their day.

“The USO made me smile today,” said Airman First Class Laquinton Brunson. “Seeing the USO volunteers dressed in costumes brightened my drill weekend. Now my family and I can dunk Oreos for a week.”

Of course, the special delivery of Oreos would not have been possible without the support from our caring and compassionate USO volunteers. Twenty dedicated USO volunteers and USO South Carolina advisory board members, devoted over 120 volunteers hours collectively, in orchestrating the pick-up and delivery of the 2,790 family size packages of Oreos, ensuring the receiving service members on duty felt supported and thought of by the USO and our partners.

“Thank you for the support, it keeps us going,” said Staff Sgt. Brandin Iseah.

Throughout a service member’s military journey, it is often the little things that brightens their day, and USO South Carolina did just that on National Oreo Cookie Day.
