Warm Hearts in Winter’s Chill: USO Supports Stranded Service Members Amid Flight Cancellations
When winter storms wreak havoc on travel plans, military service members are not immune to the chaos.
Amid a severe winter storm that has paralyzed the Southeastern United States, the USO center at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has become a sanctuary for stranded service members and their families. The storm has led to thousands of flight cancellations and treacherous travel conditions across the region.
Bob Hopkins, a Vietnam veteran and dedicated USO volunteer for two decades, was among those providing support. “I enjoy taking care of Soldiers at the USO; it’s my way of giving back to my country and those in uniform,” Hopkins said, offering comforting words and hugs to those in need.
Seaman Apprentices Laniah Pierre and Eugene Smith, en route to Norfolk from training, found themselves stranded after their flight was canceled. “Our flights were canceled, and the USO was there to help us coordinate another flight,” Pierre said. “We are grateful for the USO’s support.”
Petty Officer Second Class Darron Francis, also traveling to Norfolk, expressed his appreciation for the USO’s consistent assistance. “I always look for the USO,” Francis said. “I know I can always count on getting the resources or help I need.”
In one instance, the USO staff assisted a soldier who had been stranded for two days, securing complimentary lodging at a local hotel thanks to an anonymous donor. This act of kindness provided much-needed relief during a challenging time.
Mary Lou Austin, Executive Director of USO Georgia, emphasized the organization’s commitment during such crises. “The USO will always be a place to help in times of need, as well as just a place to go to sit and relax,” Austin said. “The USO is a constant that service members and their families can always count on for assistance.”
Christina Shively, Senior Area Operations Manager for USO Georgia, highlighted the significance of their support. “In times of extreme weather or family emergencies, USO airport center volunteers and staff often go above and beyond to help service members and their families,” Shively said.
As the winter storm continues to disrupt travel across the Southeast, the unwavering dedication of USO volunteers and staff at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport ensures that America’s service members and their families have a place of refuge and support.
